Moved from overseas - can't apply for an Aqua credit card?

I recently moved to the UK from New Zealand. I'm looking to build a credit history and according to the MSE eligibility calculator, would be 95% likely to be approved for one of Aqua's cards. Great! Except that when I go to fill in the application on Aqua's site, it insists on having my previous address (since I've lived at my UK address for less than 3 years) and won't accept an address with a non-UK post code.

Tried to call them about this issue but their call centre gave me an automated message about it being outside office hours (despite the website saying their phone line's open 10am to 6pm on a Sunday). Don't seem to have any other way to contact them (except by post).

Thinking surely someone else has encountered this issue before - what can I do? I was attracted to Aqua because they actually have rewards options, but might have to look into alternatives I guess. Any suggestions of credit cards that won't require me to have lived in the UK for at least 3 years?

  • I would look at cards issued by the bank you bank with. I remember apply to my first card (linked to my bank account) and adding a foreign address as previous one and was accepted.
  • Thanks for the response! Hmm, I'm with Lloyds, and the eligibility checker only gives me ~50% approval rating for the Lloyds cards. Is it more likely that they'll accept me since I bank with them? (The application form does seem to let me put in an NZ previous address, so that's progress!)
  • In my experience yes, but even better of the application is done on the branch system as an add on product or if you can, apply from your online banking (whilst logged in).

The limit may be redicously low, but if you keep spending regularly under the limit and paying in full every statement, after 6 months you can get a limit increase.
  • Don't expect much from any credit card issuer until you've been here longer.
  • How long is longer? I'm not fussed about limit at this point, or APR, I just want to start building a credit history in the UK (and if I can get some cashback or Amazon gift cards at the same time, great). No transaction fees on purchases overseas was also a big drawcard with Aqua (and their website claims they're good for new arrivals to the country wanting to build a history... not the impression I got!).
  • With regards to no foreign transaction fee, then the Lloyds Avios duo is one of the best overall travel/reward card. Not sure however if eleggibility willl be harder

Aqua is actually very good for purchases (but not withdrawals) abroad. You pay no fees at all. That is the reason why i still keep it. I also pay in full every month so never paid any interest. But be carefull which Aqua card you choose, because the classic does not have the free usage abroad.

Probably all cards including prepaid cards will verify your identity in much the same way. Get on the electoral roll or get the householder to put you on it: Check out the local council's website for info and possibly a form. Try applying for a card in person or by telephone instead of online so you can explain your situation.

The blurb on the Aqua Start card mentions new to the UK, not had credit etc. so have a try for that. Otherwise try Vanquis. Overall, if Vanquis declines you are most likely a no-hoper.

Write to them and appeal! I don't get why people are so put off writing an appeal letter nowadays. No harm to try appeal a lost cause anyway. The only thing that can happen is you get accepted!
