If you are very short of money and he is unlikely ever to work again it may be worth writing to the card companies and asking them to put a hold on the payments and interest until there has been enough time to make a better long term prognosis. Sometimes in cases like this when there is a major health problem the companies will (with a doctors letter) write off the debt. So well worth you going to Citizens Advice and possibly also talking to national debtline and seeing if they can help you with it. I hope he gets over it and is able to have a good quality of life when he comes out
    Credit card debt - NIL
Home improvement secured loans 30,130/41,000 and 23,156/28,000 End 2027 and 2029

2022 all rolling into new mortgage + extra to finish house. 125,000 End 2036
  • Thanks to everyone for your suggestions.... SusieT - I have contacted his bank & credit card but all they can do is put a hold on interest for 60 days. The debt will still be there after that & at the moment the future looks very bleak indeed for us.
I applied for a balance transfer card to try & get some breathing space at least but have been turned down so no where to go now....

At completely exhausted as visiting him everyday and the stress is taking it's toll + petrol costs on top & all the other money worries just make it unbearable to say the least.

I have no one to turn to & it is a very lonely place to be

Seriously they CAN do more for you. Don't get in more debt to pay them, in your situation I would stop paying until you get a default notice which will then stop the interest, then pay then all £1 a month and in spring (after they have defaulted him) contact stepchange and hand the whole lot over to them to deal with.
If they phone, tell them you will only communicate in writing, and if you can block their calls.
Tell Stepchange (or Payplan - just NOT a fee paying provider), that his health is very bad and ask that they send a doctors letter to see if the creditors will write off the debts.
You atre not alone, and you need your energy for looking after your husband, not worrying about debt. Do not get yourself in debt for something that will be easily (yes once you get the defaults and pass it over it WILL be easier) sorted by someone else.
In your position please please please do not transfer his debt to you, just try to stay calm and look after yourself and your husband
