Which Amex? Can i change?

Options
Hey guys didnt really think this through before hand, here goes.

Applied for an AMEX Platinum card, said refferred didnt give istant decision, to be fair didnt think i was going to get accepted as my credit file isnt the greatest although last 2 years are good and getting better, still have a ccj to fall off just over 14 months.

Recieved an email today with all the bits that i had signed up for paperless statements and how to activate my card when recieved. (im guessing i have been accepted or amex is pranking around and playing with my feelings) .

Anyway my current question is do i keep the platinum card £450 annual fee for mainly airport lounge prioity pass and all which i could probably use i do travel on short holidays 5-10 times a year, however lounges have never really interested me anyway.
OR can i call them and ask them to swap it for a gold card? or something else on their lineup that would be of use to my life more than the platinum.
Thanks.

From previous conversations with them, I understand that you can only "product change" across product of the same category/partner, so in your case you should be able to change across the rewards charge cards (platinum, gold and green). You may try to call them straight away or after a trial period as Amex tend to refund pro-rata the annual fee charges if a product is cancelled or swapped for a cheaper one mid term.
  • Its upto you simply ring them and they will downgrade it
  • I did this when they upped the cost of the Amex platinum charge card to £450/year a few years ago. I phoned Amex and asked for the gold card instead. Was a simple, 5 minute conversation, and the new card was sent out within a few days.

However, are you sure that you dont get the platinum card fee-free for the first year and then £450/year after that? Ask and find out first?

If you call Amex they will help you.

The Gold Card will give you a couple of free lounge visits per year but with that amount of travel ie five to ten trips per year I'd consider the BA Premium Plus card at £195 per year. This will give you a 241 to mirror a redemption ticket once you have spent £10k. If your travel dates are flexible and you like to arrange your own packages look at buying miles or using sign-up offers for complementary cards such as SPG. Even though we had a free BA Amex Plus because of the Plat - we gave up the Plat.

    Good luck.

It's £140 in the second year.

You have a ccj and poor credit history.
Somehow you have managed to obtain an Amex Platinum charge card.
How you managed this with a ccj is beyond me.
    You should be happy!
PS. Applying for a charge card with a £450 annual fee for the sole purpose of getting into an airport lounge 5-10 times a year is not exactly sound financial sense.

It isn't exactly 5 - 10 times per year is it? That would be 10 to 20 flights and would be 10 - 20 lounges for two people as Amex Plat offers Priority Pass for the holder and a guest making it a potential 20 to 40 "visits" per year. 40 visits would cover the annual fee alone.

The card also offers excellent travel insurance for all the family traveling with you, and free car hire insurance plus loads of other benefits. The have a moderately useful concierge srvice, and their claims department is a dream to deal with if you are unlucky enough to need to make a claim. I have a had three claims over the years and each was sorted over the phone in a short call and a couple of emailed documents.

The 30,000 signup miles can also be transfered to BA and is worth a chunk.

It is an excellent card for a frequent traveller but isn't wortwhile for all.

I couldnt agree with you more! In the aspect they actually accepted me with a CCJ for the past 2 years ive been googled to see if this had been accomplished or happened which i found zero to none that have managed. Im going to stick and thank my luck that all went through and enjoy the perks, to be fair with the shop small benefits due to kick in on the 3rd of Dec i have my formula of making up for the annual fee so all has been justified on my end.

As another person did post 5-10 trips with my partner, there for up to potentially 40 lounge passes, also got her a sup card where we both have +1 allowance. So happy days :)
