A cheapo service at a fast fit type place will be an oil change and a free toilet roll.
As you look puzzled at the toilet roll they tell you thats the list of jobs they recomend you have done before you take the death trap thats going to explode before you get halfway home. So it all needs doing NOW!.
Then your cheap service costs 5x more than you expected.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

The only times I've felt ripped off was by independents. The one before last charged me £50 for oil. The 3 times I used Kwik-Fit were just fine. I even got a discount code so it cost less than expected. For MoTs they didn't say any work needed doing to pass, just the odd advisory. As the septics say, YMMV.0

As i've said before, the old days are mostly gone as fast fit places, they can't afford to rip people off like they used to with all the social media around. They serve a purpose and "most" will do a reasonable job.
Main dealers, independents and fast fit are all capable of poor work, you just have to find one you trust out of the 3.0 -

I've had my car since August 2015. Its a 2006 Skoda Fabia. I had it serviced last November and the other week also. First time costing £190 and the second £277, I looked on Halfords and Quik fit and noticed a full service costs £150/160. Is it better just to go to there instead? I just went to the garage my parents have always went to and never questioned it.
Also I was flicking through my paperwork in the car and noticed there is a service record book which hasn't been filled out since the previous owner had it serviced in 2014. I didn't know this existed until today. Do I need it filled out?
Also as a side note, I was told my two front tyres need replaced alongside something else which I can't remember exactly the wording, front pads I think. How do I know what tyres I need? How do I know that this work definitely needs done? My partner was talking to a few people and was told the garage is well known for overcharging and doing unneccessary work
As mentioned the most modern cars alternate between major and minor services per the manufacturers recommended schedule with other things such as brake fluid replacement usually every 3 years so the difference in price between the 2 services may be due to what needed to be done at that service interval. On a 10 year old car I doubt stamps in the book are going to make a huge difference to value of the car and most of the service jobs can easily be done with some basic tools and a Haynes type manual, however I accept that you and you partner may not be mechanically minded.
As for tyres, as mentioned, it will be in the handbook and marked on the tyre it's self and even with out any technical capability, every motorist should know if a tyre is illegal or getting close, it is the drivers responsibility to check this regularly, not something you leave for a garage to check during a service or MOT. As for brake pads, they are a consumable item, you've had the car over a year and their life will depend on yours, your partners and the previous owners driving habits.I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world0
