Had to recently repair a patch of tarmac, about 2ft at widest point going down to nothing, ie a long 'wedge shape' about 13ft in length.Got quoted £400....by a professional well known company....
We decided to repair using concrete, dyed black, (to look like tarmac) by using cementone from a builders merchant £7 for a tin the size of a large jar of coffee. Obviously we needed several, when it was suggested that the cementone was just black powder, and maybe soot would colour it just as effectively, being as I have got 2 very sooty chimneys (burnt wood for a while) this appeals to me, and would use up the soot and I have someone who has swept chimneys before has all the stuff and happy to do it. So, would it work? :rotfl: thanks!

Hi hamaradam,
You should get more help with this on the In My Home board so I'll move your thread over there.

Why dont you just use repair macadam, you can get it from Jewsons etc, and its literally tarmac in a bag, so no messing with soot or concrete as this is just the job. Used it once myself
Approx £7 for a bag which should be enough..........
I have nothing better to do!!!!

Oh no! I never knew that you could get tarmac in a bag! damm! Nobody told me.....Oh well it's done now, but I have a much bigger area which we are looking at doing next year in concrete, and because of the size of it, we may want to go back to plan A and try the soot. If it would work.0

Another option, though comes at a cost, is to paint the concrete with bitumastic paint (obtained from most diy stores). Thin it down with white spirit and it will cover very easily0

you were probably best repairing in concrete this time as it is difficult to compact the tarmac when you have nothing to hit with the whacker which would be the case at the point end of the wedge.0
