Connecting to Internet on laptop with wire without WiFI

Is there a way of doing this the old fashioned way with a cable via a BT hub?

I've connected via one off the yellow terminals titled Ethernet on the back of the BThub, but when I go to Ethernet in settings it tells me I'm not connected.

Internet doesn't work if I turn WiFi off

on a lot of laptops the ethernet gets switched off when on battery power as a power saving measure, check power settings or connect your mains lead. Ethernet usually faster than wireless.

  • System claims it is unplugged, but it is plugged in between router and laptop. Presumably the cable from the phone socket to router remains in the same socket?
  • yes, when switched off it shows as unplugged - have you checked the power settings?

Device Manager, find your Ethernet card and see if it is enabled.

Network Connections via Control Panel on some versions of Windoze; right-click on Ethernet connection to enable/disable, same for wireless connection

    Yes, wi fi works fine

If I press on Settings > Ethernet, it just says 'not connected', there's no option of turning it on.

but if I click it provides these details (I've removed the address details)

    Manufacturer: Realtek
Description: Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller
    Driver version: 9.1.404.2015
    Physical address

    There is a submenu with

    change adapter options
    network and sharing centre

the first just confirms the network cable is unplugged but wi fi is OK

Under devices is has a lot of entries which says WAN miniport, and there is a red connection on the BT hub which is labelled WAN should I be using that?

Do you have a 2nd cable to test with in case it's just a broken wire/plug?

Some laptops have a button or use Fn key to flip between wired and wi-fi.
