So pick up my £700 Hyundai coupe tomorrow its fully loaded feel more excited about the than getting my last new company car.

My plan is to try and keep it on the road for at least 2 years learning new skills alone the way.

Have access to a well stocked workshop inc welder and air.

I've been running a Ford Sierra for the past 8 years, this years servicing and repair bills have amounted to £75. £30 for a starter motor, £10 for a cam belt, £25 for a MOT test and £10 for oil & oil filter.

The Bangernomics thread might have started a long time ago but is still regularly updated.

My £500 VW Golf has now done 10,000 miles since Feb 2016, few repairs along the way but very cheap motoring
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

I had a few Sierras in the past. Very good cars (for the time )

    Thanks folks

So far I'm really impressed with the Hyundai all the electrics work and air con is very cold ( not that I need it this time of year)

Knew it needed a new tyre when I bought it local kwik fit quoted £105 local independent said £65 for new £35 for part worn with 7 mill of thread so went for this

Think that amazes me is that everyone has an opinion on my purchase from " there must be lots wrong for it to be £700 what a waste of money " to " thats not real bangernomics as you could buy new. So just playing "
  • Bought a 10 year old Nissan D21 pick-up.
    Ran it for 17 years.

Did all my own maintenance, welding etc, etc, and at nearly 28 years old, it still looked quite good, and was mechanically sound. 2.5L diesel was puurrrfect . . .

Only sold it, because someone made me an offer I couldn't refuse :)

Just make sure things like cam belt, if it has one, is replaced within the recommended time/mileage and check the age of the tyres.
Good luck with your cheap motoring, I did it for many years but now getting older buy 3-4 year old cars and keep for 4-5 years.

Unless you happen to have one made of special steel, I suspect it will have dissolved long before it reaches 20 years old, let alone nearly 30, I'm afraid. To be honest, if it's not rusty already you're doing well, they're not the most resistant cars to tinworm.
  • I'm running a car which cost less than 1% of my salary. I love it. If it gets bent, no biggy, I just get another. Only time I lock it is if my phone is in the glove compartment.
  • Rust wise on the coupe nothing structural needs addressing atm annoyingly the bonnet has suffered untreated stone chips so has bubbles on the lead edge apart from that pretty sound

No need to get the mig out just yet
