since moving from windows to linux mint , my nas drive keeps being accessed , about every 10-20 mins or so ,

the computer (nuc) is left on 24/7 , and merrily goes to sleep , but the nas keeps the cat awake at night

due to her bad temperament , and sharp claws (the cat not the wife!) I would like to turn this useless to me facility off.

nas is a dlink dns320l , no changes have been made to it , it seems to go into sleep mode (as set) then gets woken up by the PC

    any ideas ?

    latest mint 18 cinamen

So ... er ... why don't you just turn off the Network Attached Storage and unplug it?

Can't advise without seeing the computer. Could be that you have mintbackup / backup tool set to automatic backup on the N.A.S. If that's the case and you turn off the NAS you should get a message on your Mint box that the NAS cannot be accessed.

no backup running , yes I could go to the other side of the building and turn it off , if dlink had not have designed a sleep mode I would do that , but the sleep worked in windows but not linux

The only default service I've got running is "NFS Service" all others are stopped.

You could give this a go (I think It's a safer/cleaner way to mount remote folders onto a Linux machine at boot, so it should stop it accessing the NAS unless it needs to):

    http://blog.zwiegnet.com/linux-server/mount-nfs-share-linux-mint/

The path to the shares on the D-link should be something like
    /mnt/HD/HD_a2/<your folders>

So in the fstab file it should read something like :
    192.168.1.###:/mnt/HD/HD_a2/ /mnt/NAS nfs users.rw.auto 0 0

A better way IMO is to use autofs, it's what I use on Suse:

I think its resolved itself! (think) , I was wondering why it showed twice in networks

been into dlink settings and created a multimedia folder , let it index for a few mins , stopped it , rebooted pc and dlink , deleted multimedia in dlink and rebooted both

    only one dlink showing now

I think a firmware update or an app caused it. But if you didnt install any additional apps then it wont be that one.

Ive installed JDownloader to mine and it works a treat, i can queue up any upload/downloads and give it max bandwidth whilst everyone is asleep.

I also have it connected to my dropbox account. Take a picture on my phone and it gets saved to my phone and uploaded to my dropbox account and then at regular intervals that gets backed upto my NAS.
