I agree with bengal-stripe, post #6. If you signed the membership form which entailed signing up to a certain contract length without a 'cooling off' period then you're stuck with it.

You have a complaint against the unauthorised use of your bank details if you withheld them from the form, but it wouldn't change the fact that you still owe them the money for the membership fees to date.

Other service providers report to credit files; think utility companies, mobile phone companies.

Yes, it's a scandal they're allowed to do so. They use 'credit' reporting as blackmail to try and ensure bills are paid on time, credit or not. I've never seen any evidence of a gym doing it, and it's been mentioned in this forum many times before.

The link here is to an American site. In the UK I don't know of any gyms that report you to the CRAs - why would they be allowed to do so? The only danger of being blacklisted by the CRAs is if the gym secures a county court judgement against you, and you don't pay it.

Gyms will go to a debt collection agency which will report to the CRA

I think this happens only when an account was previously being reported to the CRAs and was bought by a third party.

    will they?

on any day 1000s of people are being chased by debt collectors fo "fake" parking tickets from private parking Cos

ONLY if this goes to the county court , and the are found guilty and do not pay do the CRAs see this

I think this boils down to if the company is large enough to report to CRAs , many , many companies are not registered with the correct authorities
