Computer not detecting my phone properly

I got a new cd today so as usual I transferred the music to my PC so that I could then transfer it to my phone. The problem is I am getting a message saying my phone is detected but that it cant Access the phone. Another thing that happens is my phone does not get charged while connected to the PC.
Is there anything I can do?
The os is windows vista, my phone is a Sony and I use sonys media go software. I do think the issue is with settings on the PC or the phone. The question is what setting.

Oh, vista - that should be fun. Find a USB driver for your Sony e.g.

Yeah, worked fine on my dads m4 aqua. Mine is z3 compact and is marshmallow. My dads is lollipop.
Whether it's a security setting somewhere or just the joy that is marshmallow, who knows.0 -

The problem is solved. I did it by going to device manager while I had it connected up and selecting update drivers.0
