I was in a supermarket earlier about 4pm and it took a long time for my payment to go through, about 20 seconds or more, cashier told me card payments were slow this afternoon. Might be linked
  • Its ok - I have found the answer:

A technical fault at Barclays has caused significant problems for the bank's customers today leaving many unable to access their funds. Internet banking, telephone banking and a whole variety of cash machines were "down" this afternoon due to a hardware failure.

Is that from a recent news item?

It's that time of year for Barclays.

22nd September 2014: Barclays technical fault leads to declined debit cards.

30th October 2015: Barclays bank customers raging after "technical issues" stop them getting into their accounts.

The only problem I have is when the checkout operator doesn't enable their terminal for card payment. This happens mainly with contactless and Apple Pay but does happen with other card payments.

    Just this week:
    TESCO with Natwest VISA debit
    Checkout: Not working.
Me: Oh well if it's not working I'll have to go to ASDA.
Checkout: try it again ... Oh it's working now.

    BOOTS with Apple Pay
    Checkout: Just tap it again

    ICELAND with TSB debit
    Checkout: That didn't work
Me: OK bye-bye. *walks out of store leaving my shopping*

I'm very hard on stores/checkouts. Basically if my card doesn't work then based on past experience it's their fault and I'll spend my money elsewhere.
  • Got the information from both financialadvice & downdetector.
Although it doesnt help when you are standing at the checkout with a queue behind you being told there is a problem with your card!! Thanks Barclays.:(
