Draughty double glazing

Hi there

I'm looking for advice as to how I can sort out draughty double glazing.

We have went round the windows and majority of them are draughty and we are freezing. We cannot afford to replace the windows and doors and we have a feeling they ave not been fitted propertly (they are 13 years old and were put in the house when it was built).

Is there anything we can do?

  • Any holes seal up and you can get the clear film to put over as a layer of insulation! I also know someone that put up bubble wrap which disint look very nice but did the trick. And you can get a foam shape tape that goes in the cracks between the glass and the frame.

Thick curtains too and close them when it gets dark

There is bound to be something on youtube to guide folks on this, but one can also be bang up to date here and just watch "I, Daniel Blake." There is a scene with him bubble wrapping windows.
  • Where are the drafts coming from? Around the frame? Between opening windows and the frame? Are they definitely drafts, sometimes what feels like a draft can actually just be cool air flows around the window.

Some are coming from around the frame and some from between the frame. If it's windy you can see the blinds moving.

I've just had to reseal my windows. An easy job fixed with a tube of sealant and a sealant gun.

If your windows aren't closing properly, investigate and look closely at the hinge mechanism - I bet there's a plastic bit on the inner end of the hinge that the hinge isn't closing properly into. The hinges are cheap and can be easily replaced. This is common problem where windows hang on the side and they sag when open and twist a bit when closed.

In fact anything about double glazing is generally easy to fix with basic DIY skills. Full replacement is rarely the only answer.

Having had badly fitted uPVC windows before (fitted by one of the national companies) - (think they were called something like 'Whether dolphin or some other sea going creature")...... i feel your pain, or in this case draught.

Ironic that the very thing that they failed to do (seal) is part of their name?

Anyway, when we ripped the windows out, you could see the massive gaps between the frame and the brickwork, like you could get fingers through the gap. The local company that replaced them said they had never seen such badly installed windows. So, there is every chance that the windows are fine but the gaps are not sealed in. If you are thinking of decorating one of the affected rooms soon, have a think about taking off any plastic facings that the installers put on, these cover the gaps between the window frame and the wall, it maybe that there is no foam filler or it has broken down and needs re-done.

    Good luck
