Lots of people do it - have the per registered as a new pet at vets and PDSA under friend's or family member's name. Easily done - unfortunately.

They may have their pet already registered at one vet under their own name but what stops them registering the same pet in a different area under someone else's name?Nothing

I think to stop this - all microchips should be registered and vets should have access to full details on the microchip not just the microchip number as they do now.

    Why would it not happen?

When I registered for PDSA care all I did was show them the required benefit proof. Nobody wanted proof that the dog was mine.

I can assure you that the person that I knew did have her daughter's dog registered with vet practice as her dog and went to all vet appointments, with her daughter and the dog.

The dog was bought by the daughter , lived with the daughter, and her family, was fed by the daughter and trained by the daughter. It was the daughter's dog.

Because there are too many measures in place to stop it. Many people would have microchips in their cat or dog, and it would come out straight away that fraud is being committed. Even if you didn't have a microchip, and you DID get away with it, (which is very unlikely,) it would catch up with you and the person helping you defraud the system.

Plus, I don't know if it's the same now, but at one time, the PDSA only allowed one pet to get the free treatment.

In addition, I am pretty sure that the PDSA require people to register with their vet and then register with them too before any treatment is needed. They say on their website 'don't wait for your pet to become ill, register now.'

No matter how many times people say 'loads of people do it,' I have never known anyone do it, and I find it hard to believe it's as easy to do as people are making out.

Just because you don't know anybody who did ti, or rather someone who admitted to doing it, doesn't mean it doesn't happen. What measures are there to stop it happening?

As I said I registered my dog for PDSA treatment by showing my benefit letter. Nothing else, just dog's details and show benefit letter as proof of eligibility. Not somebody telling me . I did it.

Now , the vet surgery don't know me from Adam, nor do they know if that dog actually lives with me or not. You do not have to prove you own a dog to register it with a vet. Just give them the information.

The person who used it for her daughter's dog , registered the dog as hers with her name and address. How would the vet know the dog lived in someone else's house?

I can assure you it did happen. Her husband did not approve so would have been unlikely to tell us it was happening if it wasn't.

But then you don't know about the system.

IF you are registering wIth a PDSA vet surgery you can register 3 pets, but only one pedigree pet.

If you are registering with a local vet who provides PDSA treatment to eligible clients you can only register one animal.

You do have to be registered for 6 months before being entitled to treatment but if you register your, or your daughter's pet , when it is acquired then after 6 months you are eligible for PDSA treatment as long as you continue to receive the required benefit.

Nonsense as vets do not routinely scan for a microchip when you visit them.

This scam goes on all over the place and you are very naive thinking it does not

    - like what exactly?
If it were as simple as getting your mate on benefits to take your pet and pretend it's theirs, everyone would be doing it.

It actually is that simple and lots of people do it all the time - not all but lots.

every vet I have used want payment upon collection - even when you have said goodbye to the pet - having to do this today and have already transferred the money to pay the vet from savings - so I can concentrate on making my sally's last hours good

Just come back to this thread, I hope that everything went as smoothly as it could lemontart.

There is a big difference in vets, the last ones I used and my current one have both said to give them a call later with payment details.

I know one of my drivers claims that a pet of his belongs to his mother to get free treatment for his dog, so it most certainly does happen and yes, I did make a comment.

My first time having a realy ill pet. Horrified at the thought of having to put her down because I don't have the money. Yet fully insured for life. Reason I have insurance is to pay large bills alongside ongoing care. If I had stacks of xash wouldn't need insurance !!
