HSBC PPI Paid Twice?

Long story short, back in 2009 a PPI claim against HSBC was upheld & I received several thousand pounds which cleared an existing loan with HSBC, end of story or so I thought. Earlier this week I received a letter from HSBC PPI collections department claiming that there is still an outstanding amount of PPI redress that they are waiting to deposit into an account for me upon receipt of a form that came with the letter, this came as a bit of a surprise as I'd thought all the aforementioned PPI had been handed back, there was some excess over & above the amount of the loan that I received at the time. I went to my local HSBC branch & asked for them to check their records to double check to ensure no mistakes had been made & it was confirmed that they had no record of the PPI redress being paid & the amount in the letter was correct.

My memory is not what it once was but, I'm sure this money has already been paid, could the banks record of record keeping still be that bad that records have been misfiled? I don't want to claim the redress if sometime in the future it comes back to haunt me & I'm up on a charge of fraud, help.

In some cases the amount refunded was not enough so a secondary payment needed to be issued.

Thanks for the reply but, there is no mention in the letter of a secondary payment. It states 'Our records show we sent you a letter in August 2009 with an offer to pay you £xxxx to resolve your PPI complaint. At the time of sending this follow-up, our records showed we had not yet received a response from you'

Better tell them then because they'll ask for it back and you'll have to give it to them.

But they can't find any record of having previously paid this redress.

I'd be honest about this if I were you. Certainly don't spend any money they might send you unless you are very sure it is due to you...
  • Just be honest about it - also, could you find a statement to prove that it was paid? Or was it too long ago for these to still be available?
  • I cannot find hard copies of paperwork, this was over 6 years ago & have moved addresses, the statements electronically online only go back to the start of 2010, I took the letter to my local branch, explained the situation, showed them the letter whereby they checked & they could find no record of redress having been paid, hence this thread regarding record keeping of HSBC being suspect.

It would seem the only thing to do will be to ignore the letter & let this one slide.
