Still can't restart properly after Windows updates

I seem to be getting at least one update every week on a Thursday/Friday morning. I have had this happen since Windows 10 did it's anniversary update.

Each update seems to have worked because I get a message on Windows when I do finally get back to tell me the update was successful. Similarly if I look on my update list each update appears for slightly different reasons, same code, different title.

However, each update seems to land me in the same situation where upon a restart I get a black screen with the swirly dotted blue circle- but it just stays on that page for hours.
I say hours because after so long I turn off the PC and turn back on again. This used to be enough but now isn't and I have to click the delete key repeatedly which I think means the PC is in safe mode? (F12 used to work but didn't last week).

What can I do so I don't have this same issue with my PC not restarting properly? I've tried the 'update and shut down' option but the same issue happens. I'm out of ideas and can't afford the £150 I've been quoted for someone to have a look.

  • I've experienced the same but switching off (after the swirly dotted blue circle doesn't appear to be doing anything) and then switching back on again has worked for me. If next time you switch on you get the same thing try switching off (hold down power key) and then switch back on but don't touch any keys. It's really frustrating I know. You have to be patient I suppose.

You're probably using an update which will not function on your system or has been superseded.

Download and run wsus offline update and let that do the right updates.
