New account with previous BR creditor

I went BR back in 2007. Two of the creditors were RBS group (natwest and mint).
I'd like to apply for a new account to use as donor accounts to switch to M&S, RBS seem the obvious choice as their offerings appear to be some of the weakest right now.
Has anyone experience with this? If I apply for a basic account and I get rejected, will affect my credit rating much? It's currently 5/5 with noddle and I have 7 current accounts that I am using as savings vehicles, I've purposefully avoided the banking groups involved in my BR till now.
