The first one is close to japanese knotweed, but I don't think it is! Look, the edges of the leaves are rough vs smooth edges on jkw, and a hairy stem vs smooth on jkw. Japanese-Knotweed-3.png

The second one is a common weed that I pull loads of up.

The second one is Geum urbanum, a right pest, related to the cultivated strains of geum, or avens.

The first has me beaten, but it isn't Japanese knotweed.
  • Pretty sure the first one is an epimedium but not sure which one without a flower...could also be a actinidia ...if you had a kiwi fruit in your compost!

I'd go with actinidia rather than epimedium.....

Sorry for the delay in replying. I was very pleased and interested regarding your opinions. Also, I have done a bit of reading about these plants.
They seem to be (1) Actinidia. (I have certainly composted kiwi in the past and the resulting compost may well have been placed where the Actinidia is growing) and (2) Geum species. I did not see any flowers on both last year, so will check again next year if they survive winter/are not dug up before flowering.

    Thanks for all the replies.

    Sorry for the delay.

Thanks Davesnave, I also think the plant is self heal. My gardening records state for 2017 that these seeds were sown. I have therefore put this plant back were it was.
