Late last year/into new year,we had a house extension, which included fully integrated kitchen appliances.
We ordered and paid for the Wickes kitchen in November last year,it was installed in January, and we moved back into the house (and using brand new kitchen)in May.

The weekend that just gone, the washing machine broke down. This afternoon I contacted Zanussi to see about having it repaired, thinking "it is only 6 months old".As soon as the lady asked me when it was purchased, the penny dropped that, actually, the 12 month insurance might have lapsed.

Tonight I will be able to dig out the receipt,or phone Wickes tomorrow, who will be able to confirm the date of purchase, but if it was purchased before 18th November,is there nothing Zanussi can do,even though it wasn't installed until January?(I don't expect the insurance to start from moving back into the house date, but from date of installation would be very good).

I remember we had purchased it by this time last November, but not certain of date .

The warranty will probably be the delivery date (from the shop/supplier) not the purchase date.

The date fitted is irrelevent to them, they sold it on x date and you took delivery on xx..

Your warranty will be one of those.

If the warranty is no longer valid you still have your rights with Wickes (assuming that's who you bought the washing machine from) under the Consumer Rights Act to fall back on, although you may be asked to provide independent evidence that the fault is inherent as the machine was purchased more than 6 months ago.
  • Thank you agrinnall, will contact them now, because Zanussi this morning insist that the warranty goes fro the date of purchase

I'd try querying that with them again. You paid in November, but you mentioned after your initial post that the appliance was actually delivered in Dec/Jan. I'd expect a warranty to run from when the item is delivered.

Suppose you ordered a sofa that takes 12 weeks to make. The warranty starts when you receive the sofa, not the day you order it!

I'd try ringing Zanussi back, don't mention that you've phoned already, and saying the washing machine was ordered in November but delivered in Dec/Jan (forget installation), so doesn't the warranty start then?

p.s. As others have said your thread title is using the wrong terminology - you are talking about a warranty, not insurance, and they're not the same thing. Talk about warranties when you speak to Zanussi.

Delivered to you by the company you purchased it off? Or the fitters had it ready to fit?

It will most likely be the day the seller shipped it out. Which may not be the day you received it.

Been there done that, your bespopke handmade kitchen delivered to their unit where they modify them as required, making it appear to be better than a flatpack item. All appliances were delivered there also which may have been weeks before the fitting date. Depending on how many changes they need to make.

Thank you very much for all your replies.

    GOOD NEWS :j:

As suggested by agrinnall,I phoned Wickes and spoke to the shift manager, who remembered me icon_redface.gif .

He understood that I felt it unfair that you can pay £11,200 for a kitchen in November, not have it installed until January(which was my bad memory, because this man pointed out it was installed-by a |Wickes installer-in mid-March),yet warranty lapses in November. (We didn't move back in and start using appliances until May,though never expected warranty to start then!).He said he would make a few enquiries for me ,and get back to me.

When he got back in touch,he said that yes,it does go from date of purchase, however,in our case, purchase date was mid -February!I asked how that could be,since we definitely paid instore in ealy-mid November.

He said that because it was such a big order, and it had a couple of tiny changes made to it before delivery, that had "reset" the order date.Curious,I said "But I don't think we made any changes after the November order, did we?" he responded that no,we didn't,but when it came closer to a confirmed installation date, and it was time for Wickes to order from suppliers, just because of the way Wickes "paid themselves",that reset the clock to Feb14th.So that is when the warranty starts.I am still not sure what little changes he meant-might be something to do with their own administration.

He sent me an 8page copy of my receipt, with order number and the date 14th Feb,I phoned Zanussi immediately, they found us on their data base, and someone is coming to repair this Thursday :).

Thank you again, everyone, for your help. All this time my OH was saying we would get a plumber in.He was convinced there was nothing we could do,and it's just bad luck, just hand over the money,built-in obsolence, etc.Seems I am a good egg!:D

Good news, a good response from Wickes, and also from Zanussi once you had the necessary information. Let us know if the repair is successful, we all like a happy ending!
  • Yes,I will do that.
    Thank you for your help.:A
