Marrage tax allowance

We applied for MTA for last tax year though the tax office spoken to an adivisor and told we were eligible. Got a cheque for the amount.
Now in October I got a letter to say that I hadn't paid enough tax £210..... due the the marriage tax allowance
They have sent me a letter wanting the amount in full.
It's there error surely ?
How long do I have to pay it back?
They have messed up my tax code twice since I started a new job in July after been made redundant.
Taxed me on 2 job even though I only had 1 (emergency tax for 1) then payed me all the tax back not just the emergency tax so having to pay that tax back too !
Why at Christmas time lol
Any advice

If you paid £210 in income tax and you spouse does not use up her personal allowance then you should be entitled to it. Ring HMRC to query this.0

I didn't earn enough and transferred my allowance to my husband.
I have called and all they said was that I didn't pay enough tax on my income ?
Which I know because I didn't earn enough to pay tax that's why we did the MTA. The annoying thing is that it was after the end of tax year so they had our income for the year !0 -
It must be that he didn't pay enough tax because you transferred your unused allowance to him to use.0

I suggest you post on the cutting tax forum giving details of
Who transferred the allowance ?
Who has the underpayment?
what year the underpaid tax is for?
How much was the total income for that year ?
How much tax was deducted?
All that information is needed.0 -
Will have to call them again ... they said I hadn't payed enough tax.
Just doesn't make sense to me ! She didn't sound confident that she was giving the correct info to be honest
But as it was in this current tax year that we claimed for last tax year they had all our tax info ?0 -

I think they may need the split of income between each partner too.0 -

It's not really an error. It depends how much less than the personal allowance you earned. What is not made clear when you transfer the allowance is that you don't necessarily get the full £220. If, for example, you earn £10,500 you only have £100 to transfer (because the personal allowance this year is £10,600).
The whole £220 is transferred to your spouse and the excess claimed back from you - which seems a very [STRIKE]bonkers[/STRIKE] convoluted way of doing things! The form stating that you now owe tax is very confusing. I only know this because I phoned after receiving mine - tax due £0, tax underpaid £X made no sense at all.
I was surprised the phone was answered quickly, as previous phone calls have been a nightmare. Advice would be to phone and request that everything you owe is taken from your pay over the course of the next year.. . .I did not speak out
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me..
