Are taxable benefits pro-rated?

I’m in the process of completing my first ever self-assessment for the year 2015-2016 which was initiated by HMRC due to income slipping over £100k per year.

In that year I had 2 (subsequent) jobs, one ending in July 2015 and my current role starting later in July 2015. I have a P11D for my current employment which details my private medical insurance as a benefit, but I do not have a P11D for my previous employer.

Should I expect benefits like private medical insurance from my first employer to be pro-rated for the period of April-July 2015, or to report the full value of the medical insurance from both employers?

  • yeah the p11d confirms the pro rata'd amount of benefit you received with that employer in the year if the employer pays for the premium monthly however if your employer pays a yearly premium then you'd be liable for the full amount with both employers.

You need to ask the previous employer for a P11d for that final period - they'll have sent the details to HMRC, so you must ensure that your SA return shows the same information, otherwise they'll open an enquiry.
  • Great, thanks very much for the help
