Car insurance 90% increase

I have a multicar policy. I am 31, my other half is 28.
Last year our policy for the year was £545.
I have just had the renewal through at £1135. An increase of 90%!
I called them up to see if there was some mistake and they said there wasnt, so have gone through all the online comparison sites and the insurance companies that arent on comparison sites and they are coming out even higher.
We both have 10 years NCB.
Our insurance company said that insurance has just gone up this year due to increase in risk.
Is this true?
Has anyone found the same?

It's true that premiums have risen over the last year, after a period of falling prices. However, the average rise has been quoted as 17% (see https://azcamsmedia.azureedge.net/media/themes/fab-four/Price-index/layout/2016Q3/UK-car-insurance-prices-study-Q3-2016-final.pdf).
Has there been any change in your circumstances? Has there been an increase in crime locally?0 -
Multicar policies can be a great way to tie you in to a single insurer, without actually offering YOU any real benefit.
Have you tried getting quotes for the cars separately? It may be that there's no single insurer who actually wants to deal with all of them, and you'd be better with a specialist if one of them's something other than vanilla.
Are any of them likely to particularly problematical? No change in your circumstances?0 -
My wife is 34, her insurance for last year was around £350/400, she got a renewal quote 2 weeks ago in the post from the same company (after no claims etc) and it was £1300+
She managed to get it from another company closer to the £350 on Confused so her company was taking the p****,
She got an email asking why she didn't want to renew, she had fun with that one,0 -
After five or six years of Admiral Multicar being cheapest, they raised my renewal by 60% this year and wouldn't drop much, so I took out two separate Direct Line policies for the same price as last year (including having received an SP30 during the year)0

Had pretty much the same with my insurance this year, it was £890 last year. Increased to £1380 for this year both with full NCD. Managed to find new insurance for £440 so it pretty much did me a favour making me shop around.0

There are so many factors involved in car insurance that there could be any number of reasons why your policy has become more expensive.
Maybe the number of accidents in your area has risen. Maybe the number of car thefts in your area has risen. Maybe people in your profession have crashed their cars more.
It would be impossible to say exactly why it has increased, and insurers won't tell you why because it is really irrelevant why it has gone up. You can choose not to pay it and take the bus/train for all they care.0 -
They may be less next year:
Plan to drive down premiums by capping 'rampant' whiplash payouts
The Ministry of Justice wants to make it harder to get payouts for minor injuries and save drivers money on their premiums. When you look into an abyss, the abyss also looks into you. Nietzsche
Please note that at no point during this work was the kettle ever put out of commission and no chavs were harmed during the making of this post.0
