Car insurance cancellation refund

Hello everyone. I recently passed my driving test and my mother wanted to add me to her policy as an additional driver. However, upon calling the company (Privilege), we found out that is not possible until summer next year.
She would like to move companies after finding a company happy to insure me and her this month, but the deposit is quite high and due to the poor assumptions we made, we didn't really save up for a deposit. So she is now wondering if she will get some form of refund from the current company after cancelling the policy with them, or do companies not offer any sort of refund when ending the policy? She has been with them for over a year now, and I think she recently renewed her insurance policy, but I'm not totally sure, so would be nice if someone gave an explanation to both of the scenarios.

If she didn't renew her insurance then there is no refund due!


If she did renew her policy and wants to now cancel then (unless any claim has been made) she should get a partial refund of the premium.
