Carpet clean when still in rental property

If the LL has to replace the carpet anyway when OP leaves - the only winner in going halves now is the landlord!
OP benefits from a new carpet for half the cost as LL has no obligation to replace now. How much the LL 'wins' depends on how long OP stays - if another few years, then from that point the LL has a carpet a few years old, for half the cost of a new one which seems fair not overly winning.Because replacing a carpet now is potentially cheaper to him than a new carpet in x years time and keeps a long term tenant satisfied.
Equally, not bothering the LL about an unclean carpet (responsibility of tenant) keeps a long term landlord satisfied and less likely to increased rent / eviction.0 -

But OP doesn't want a new carpet - they are happy to varnish the floorboards. Paying 50% to have 'enjoyment' of something you never wanted is not a benefit!0 -

OP can rip up the carpet and dispose of it for next to no cost....0
