Hi
I have a Samsung S4 mini. I keep getting messages saying memory is running low and some apps may not work.
I don't understand the memory. I have cot a micro sd card inside it and it says it has 26GB of free memory.
How do I get the phone to save apps and updates to the memory card instead of the phone memory?

My Android phone sets up its internal memory into a "system" partition, and one for apps. The SD Card appears as another partition.
It's pretty annoying. There is an option on my phone to format the SD card as "internal storage", which merges the internal app partition with the SD card. But this means that you can't read the SD card if you take it out of the phone. And, in any case, apps get installed to the system partition by default. :-/
The only way round this is to manually move the apps to the SD card. If you go in to settings, then apps, select an app, and there should be an option to "move to SD card". Not all apps can be moved -- some (mainly system apps) have to stay on the system partition.

Some apps can't be moved to SD, the app designer will often restrict it to:
a) stop people copying the app for free
b) if an app has to run at start up, it may not be possible to run it from the SD.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Samsung mini has only 8GB of memory, half of which is taken up by the operating system. Putting a SD memory card in there will not solve the problem (confirmed above by Strider590). Most apps will not move to SD card.
You need a phone with at least 16GB internal memory to run many apps nowadays
You can use App manager to see if any Apps will move across to SD card
I use this 'App to SD'
