JP had a W8 Pro Laptop which he upgraded to W10
He then dropped it and it broke (I detected a hard drive failure)
Insurance provided a new one (HP Pavilion 15-au072sa) which I have de-cluttered, installed software etc but then realised that it's only W10 Home :(

He needs 'Pro' for school networking etc?

School can 'upgrade' it for £144.75!!
When I clicked on upgrade on the laptop I'm sure it said £100

Would it be possible to use his previous W8/10 Pro licence to upgrade??

?

Do you have a genuine Windows 7,or 8 Pro licence?

If not, I'll take a closer look at the machine.

If he "needs" W10 pro for school then surely the school should be paying for it, or at least offering a decent student discount.

I'm not a parent, just a friend of a friend.

As I said before, don't shoot the messenger ... can anyone answer my original query?

I'd ask what features of the "pro" version he needs.

If it's to access a domain, there are a few suggestions on this thread with some workarounds for the Home versions of Windows 10:

    http://superuser.com/questions/516334/why-cant-windows-home-editions-connect-to-domains

No idea if any of them do what you need, but they sound promising.

    Hi

This seems to offer a way...

Computer running Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise/Education editions
    http://www.groovypost.com/howto/join-a-windows-10-client-domain/

as said above, surely the educational version should be available via the school/college.
