New carpet laid with wrinkles

Fitters for Carpetright put down a new carpet on Monday and it has wrinkles in random places. The fitter said the backing was too stiff to stretch any more for fear of it tearing and he suggested the wrinkles would flatten once the carpet settles down at room temperature. If this doesn't happen, I assume the fitters will return and stretch the more 'softened carpet, but this means all the furniture being removed of course - a real headache. The store manager also said give it a while to settle down, but is this something anyone else has experienced? We have had several carpets laid in the same long room over the years and not had this problem before.
If more stretching is needed, can it be done by moving furniture to one end at a time? If it can't be put right, how should I proceed?

Yes, I've experienced it before, and I've heard the same excuses.

I got them to send the fitters back, twice; they got it right the second time. Don't take any of their nonsense about it settling down.
  • 35+ years fitting carpets so i think I can shed a bit of light on the subject. Main problem is the way manufacturers spray the back of many types of lower quality carpets to give them a firm/solid feel . On a cold day I have actually had rolls that are virtually impossible to un-roll never mind stretch. Some even crack across the backing with one manufacturer suggesting the carpet is laid out for 24hrs in a warm room before fitting!! I'm sure the customer would like that!! When I see people folding up rolls to fit into their cars to take home I cringe,as it's virtually impossible to get the creases caused out when fitting.
So, creases usually caused by not rolling carpet up correctly before delivery.Plus cold weather/rooms with a majority of lower quality carpets doesn't help.
  • Thanks for comments. The carpet was delivered rolled and priced around £30+ sq. m. It's the same carpet they use in their shops and stays down for several years, so we thought it would be a good buy.
  • It doesnt sound like a cheap carpet. Get back on to them and dont let them fob you off.
    Thinking critically since 1996....
