What evidence do you have that you got those limit increases because you don't pay off in full rather than because you've never missed a minimum payment?

I've had similar increases too and I've never paid a penny in CC interest.

I'll throw that right back at you: What evidence do you have that you have had similar increases and never paid a penny in interest?

Perhaps you need to read my post again.

You said "What worked for me was..."

I was pointing out that you don't actually know.

You claim that no one can know and yet you do...

I know but I can't prove it with concrete evidence just as you or anyone else can't prove what they say with concrete evidence.

Similarly, I can't prove that my Mach 3 cartridge lasts 2 weeks longer when I use Real Shaving Co Sensitive Shave Cream, 6 weeks as opposed to 4 weeks with most makes of shaving gel including Gillette. But it does :)

My overall response regarding both keeping a small CC card balance and using shaving cream is the same: If you haven't tried it how do you know it doesn't work?

Because many people have experienced credit increases without paying interest.

It's not definitive proof, but it's a hell of a waste of money to pay interest on sub prime credit cards just on the possibility that it might improve your credit limit.

You say "many people" but who are they? How many?

Not only is it not definitive proof it's not any kind of proof at all.

As I posted earlier, if you have not done it how do you know it doesn't work?

A waste of money to you but perhaps not a waste of money for others. Or does everyone think the same way as you and have the same outlook?

As is often said on shaving forums, your mileage may vary!

Having demonstrated an inability to pay in full each month a credit card with a £100 credit limit and given them lots of interest, no doubt they are thinking about all the extra interest that they will be getting from you especially as you implied that your financial situation has deteriorated since taking out the card,

    They didn't imply that.

Plenty of reports on these forums, I've had continual increases on credit card limits though haven't needed to utilise sub prime cards and have never paid interest.

You believe what you like and others will act differently, if you are paying the credit card companys profits then we're all happy.

So based on anecdotal evidence on the forums, cases of paying the balance in full and leaving a small balance of the credit both have shown to have helped build a credit history.

So if both methods work, I don't see why anyone with a shred of sense would recommend picking the one that incurs cost unless you own the credit card company i suppose?

I got my first credit card in 1998, still as a student but working part time during terms and full time during holidays. First credit limit was £250 or £500, cannot remember exactly. A year or two later, I got a BA Amex (at the time you had to pay an annual fee if you did not spend a min per year). I have used both cards regularly for my everyday spending since then. Never paid any interest or the Amex annual fee, and they regularly increased my limit at least once a year. As I did not qualify for student loan at the time (had not been in the U.K. For the 3 years prior to my course starting), I used free balance transfers with other cards to get me through (at the time there were no balance transfer fees and basically I had free loans through my universities studies, racking up about £15-20k in total, which I completed paying after two years of graduating, again without paying any money to the credit cards companies in either fees or interests.

So, in summary, regular spend, paid always in full, has granted me regular credit card limits increases throughout the last 18 years.

As a side note, when I was recently applying for an additional mortgage, I was called in for a meeting to discuss affordability and when I was there, I witnessed a call discussing my credit file with the underwriters, and I learned the following:

    - the credit report issued to them does not show who is the issuer, but only the opening date of the account, credit limit and outstanding balance (that in some cases were up to two months out of date).
    - the underwriters looked more concerned with my outstanding balances rather then the credit limits and the ability of me getting further in debt once the application was processed: it was suggested that I could pay off part of the outstanding balance to get the application approved, but at no time was asked to close any of the credit cards with £0 balances or reduce the over all credit limit.
-they were unable to differentiate between carry over balances and everyday spend paid in full every month: as I said below I have always put virtually all my spent through credit cards to rack up point or simply for the 56 days free interest, and I have a fairly large portion of business expenses going through my credit card as well. In summary I was called in as in my application I did not declare outstanding balances on two of my cards but they could see more then £5k oustanding, and I had to print my own credit report to show them that on these cards, that spent was paid in full every month...
