Knitting for beginners
Ive decided i want to learn to knit. I can imagine its very satisfying knitting your own jumpers. When i got round to youtubing the matter it seems quite a bit more complex than i first thought.
Suppose im asking whats the best way to learn. My plan was to sit and watch YT and then get a knit along video to try and make some things. However as mentioned its become apparent that there is quite a bit of terminology and base knowledge needed before i can start throwing needles.
Any help? Directions to good educational websites?
I'd like to ask how long would be an expected amount of time before i'd be capable of knitting a reasonable jumper but assume there is too many variables.
Also it was supposed to be a money saving hobby but it seems the costs could easily add up. What moneysaving tips do you have for a knitting newbie?
I would normally look at a local community group to try and get some more hands on pro advice but i cant help but feel like i will be too out of place (sub 30, male).
Thanks for any advice.

Well, actually I would be looking for a knitting group near you- like 'knit & natter.'
Nevermind you are a youngish male... that will be novelty value, but seriously often it is so much easier if someone shows you exactly what to do at the start. Then you could follow it up with on line tutorials as revision. Generally crafty folk are only too willing to pass on their skills and are very patient with beginners.
Not a cheap hobby. However there are ways to recycle like unravelling second hand jumpers etc but as a beginner that would be harder.
It is now many many years ago but I really wanted a particular jumper and my mother was too busy to make it. I hadn't completely got the hang of things - think I had made a pair of mitts over several years and tried knitting squares (without any success!). So, knitting a jumper was really my first project and it was fine- a fancy rib which didn't show imperfect tension.!The wool was then knitted into a stocking stitch jumper and is now part of a crotcheted blanket. I hate to admit just how old that yarn is........well, older than you!
There are just 2 stitches- knit and pearl and these can be combined to make a simple pattern (garter stitch- all knit) or stocking stitch (alternate rows knit and purl) or rib (knit 1, purl 1)or something really complex. So once you have got the hang of those 2 stitches the world is your oyster
You can often pick up knitting needles at a good price at a charity shop. Sometimes they are not on show- health and safety?
Have fun!Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

I've just found this thread and was hoping to find some useful advice as I would like to learn to knit sometime soon.
OP, I learned to crochet not so long ago , I started by going to a learn to crochet afternoon in a local wool shop and then added to my knowledge by using You-Tube , the most encouragement I have had has been from joining a crochet related Facebook group. The people there are very helpful at resolving problems and providing encouragement and there are one or two males who post as well. There are often complete beginners who post and are given lots of help and encouragement.
I assume learning to knit could take a similar path for you, failing that maybe have a go at crochet ? It's certainly not money saving as it is cheaper to buy readymade garments but it is a very relaxing and enjoyable hobby and the end product can be really useful.Decluttering, 20 mins / day Jan 2024 2/20 -
Well done for wanting to learn - as has been said before, knitted garments aren't always the cheap option, but it's very relaxing and, hopefully, you'll have something to wear at the end!
If you don't have a 'knit and natter' group near you (and I'd be surprised if you don't) you may find a kindly wool shop owner who would be willing to get you going.
However, I'd start with a scarf rather then jump straight in with a sweater. You won't need as much wool, so you'll have to option of buying something really special that may be too expensive for a larger project.
Please let us know how you get on!0
