Water Feature "Mesh"

Hi all.

I am planning to create a small water feature in our garden similar to the one pictured below:-

Has anyone got any suggestions for what to use as the mesh which goes across the top and holds up the pebbles? The "proper" products are really expensive.

Thanks in advance.

  • Get some galvanised mesh from B&Q (or similar), and put it over a small wooden frame to hold it rigid. Make sure the wooden frame allows access through the middle for the pump !

I think you can do this without any mesh. Just fill it with pebbles from the very bottom.

Doesn't have to be a mesh......it could be a steel tray off the bottom of an old oil barrel.

so long as you keep a reservoir at the bottom of the tub for the water and put plenty of holes in the tray to let the water drain down.

You then need one hole in the centre of the tray for the pump fountain to extend through.

Give the tray a good coating in something waterproof.

If you intend using mesh, you need to strengthen it with a length of 1"x1" angle steel across the middle under the mesh to stop the centre collapsing under the weight of the stones.

Cannot agree. The quality of water does not depend on whether there is a mesh or not. Just surround the pump with big pebbles to provide good access for water.

Thanks to all for the replies. I thought the point of the mesh was to ensure the pump was completely submerged in water. Surely if the tub was full of pebbles, there would hardly be any room for any water!

    Anyway, thanks to everyone.
