Plastering Supplies.

Hi,

I am getting the living room, dining room and hallway re-plastered including the ceilings.

The quote is £1000 for the labour but I have been told I need to get the supplies myself. They want 10ft x3ft boards as the rooms are large.

Can anyone tell me who sells this size plaster board at all? Last time I had them from Travis Perkins who did them for about £6 a sheet but I had to pay a fortune for delivery, they got the order wrong and only do kerbside delivery (I can't lift that myself).

I have the living room and dining room that are both 13ft x13ft x9ft (height) approx which we want 12.5mm boards and then a hallway which is 13ft x 2ft x9ft which needs 9mm board.

How would I work out how much adhesive and plaster for the skimming I would need too? Last time there seemed to be an awful lot of waste.

Thanks Cher.

Contact your local builders merchants. Ours are great, deliver next day for free and are always happy to carry into the garage for me. I would ask the person doing the plastering to estimate the quantities- they should have a good idea.

Can the labourer really not source the supplies themselves?
I always thought they can get it cheaper with VAT and whatnot
  • They said they only do the work not sourcing supplies. I am struggling working out the m2 too as all the calculators online don't let me put the 9ft height of the walls or add in the celling space.
I asked them and they said just order 40 sheets. I think that could be too many.

I have managed to confirm I want 4000 x12000 sheets.

I'm surprised they want OP to supply the materials too, but VAT is a red herring - if they are VAT registered they can recover the VAT on any materials they purchase but they'd also have to charge VAT on any supply of services or goods made to the customer.

Do they want you to provide the plaster too?!

I would recommend calculating it per wall, as you would if you were floor space you would buy carpet for. Then adding them up!

You want 4m x 12m plasterboard sheets? x 40? 1920m2? Youve done something wrong or are you planning on replasterboarding the houses of parliament?!

I was going to comment earlier but thought i was being mean. With all due respect i dont think youre the best person to do this. Youre mixing metric and imperial for starters. Then youve made a mistake on the maths (guessing its an extra 0 but then you dont get that size plasterboard so dont know?!).

    10ft x 3ft is about 3m x 0.9m. Ive only ever seen plasterboard sold in 8ft x 4 ft (2440 x 1220)?!

    Im really confused:

    1. Why didnt you get the plasterer to sort it out. they should know what theyre doing
    2. Im certain they would be able to source materials cheaper with trade accounts and appropriate suppliers
    3. Strange board size (might no be but ive never heard of boards that size)
    4. Someone who plasters but cant source supplies?!

Sorry not really offered anything, ill give you my best wishes though?!
  • Can you get a quote from another plasterer? Always best to get more than one quote for big jobs anyway and the other plasterer may source own materials!

    Shuffle sideways :rotfl:
Joking aside, work in metric, feet need to be kept in shoes.
Standard plaster board size, 900x1800. 1200x2400, or 2700, or 3000.
    Drywall adhesive = 1 bag per 8m2
    plaster =1 bag per 10 m2
    plus 10% for wastage

Just get someone else in. A plasterer that wont bring supplies? Unheard of. What if you order too many? What are you going to do with them? What if you don't have enough? It might be 2 days before you can get another delivery.

If they can't arrange it themselves, they aren't decent tradesmen.

I am with phil on this one. It defies any logic, and common sense, for a true trades person to refuse to buy materials. Why? Because they will mark up the price, say 20%, to gain extra profit from the job. As they are in business to make money, and there is nothing wrong with that, the conclusion has to be they are numbskulls.
