Might be worth a look. Depends how long they make them.

I would also need to consider what to do with a redundant but brand-new length of washing-line! :D
That could be a whole new thread! :D

I think mine is 15 metres.

By the time you start spending money on clamps and hooks that may not work how you want or break you could consider a different line? I bought a retractable washing line from Argos for £5.99, fixed it to the house at one end and screwed the loop into a tree at the bottom of the garden, works a treat... retracts neatly in to its housing when not in use. You could probably even get them cheaper on Ebay.

I worked for a well know diy retailer. They sold a product like the one you describe, a retractable washing line. I would say about 50% of them where returned due to the mechanism failing. Im guessing the other 50% weren't returned because they where always fixed up (used like a standard washing line). Cheap roll out mechanisms rarely hold up well in the great British weather.

The clamps will work. Plastic and metal clamped is incredibly difficult to work loose.

You can buy metal hoops or discs at a variety of places in various sizes.... it all depends how you'll attach it really.

Get a hoop and tie 4-5 good knots onto it, don't be "tight" with the spare bit sticking out as that'll always give you an option of an extra knot or two if you thought you needed a bit more strength.

    That's interesting, Edwink!

Wonder what lengths you can get it in?,

    Is it really strong?

I do a lot of drying on hangers, so that might save having to keep using those clip-on things for securing hangers.

Thank you. I feel a trip to B&Q coming on!
Toolstation is about 1/10 of the price of B&Q and open to the public

Yeah, it was the hanger thing that appealed to me too. I dry everything I can on hangers.

They're usually about 5 meters (@16 feet) long. You make it shorter by putting the hooks through any hole. I'm using mine in a 10-foot gap between gutter pipes.

It does sag a little bit eventually and every now and again I put one of the hooks in the next hole along to counteract the stretching but it's been fine and I've had fairly heavy loads on mine.

They came in a 3 pack but I've had the same one every week for two years now.

I think it's good if you can live with the bright colours. I've embraced the colour and use multicolour fold-up hangers for the full rainbow experience. It cheers me up anyway!

Hmm. 5 metres probably won't be long enough. Could you join two together?

I must be one of the lucky ones as mines been fine for the couple of years its been up and gets retracted everytime ive finished using it... I must admit I do always 'walk' the line back so it winds back slowly and not just let it ping off on it's own.

But that's what would be the fun bit, letting it ping off! :rotfl:

  • can I ask where you bought this from and what's it called as it looks very useful.
You could consider this type of washing line (3 for £5) that I use...

Yeah I guess so, can't see why not, but maybe it's not your first choice then.

I'll consider all options! It intrigues me, that design!

Who'd have thought that the humble washing-line could be improved upon! :rotfl:
