Dumb tv, it is, thank you!

The question I was going to ask has been answered by the answers given to cloud_dog's post, ie whether to go fir a Smart or Dumb tv.
It will be my main tv but I live in an old cottage with small rooms (12'x12') so only need 32". I have decided on the Samsung Uk5100 which I can get for £219 at a few places.
Question one - crystal ball time - is this likely to come down in price for Black Friday/Cyber Monday and question two, more guidance, please on whether to buy Roku Stick, Fire, etc., To turn it into a Smart tv. I don"t want to have a monthly subscription.
Thank you in advance for help. I do hate being an older person, sometimes!

  • It's highly likely the fire tv stick will drop over the course of Black Friday - especially since they've released a new version in the US. There's no point buying the voice control unless you're a Prime subscriber since it won't work in any other apps.

No idea on a Roku - other than the interface is meant to be a bit slower, but the range of content a bit better.

Here's the question - what do you want to use the 'smart' bit for? Streaming ITV/BBC ect? Youtube/Vimeo? Games?

First step is to work out what you actually want to watch .
Smart TV + Internet connection basically gives you catchup tv free of charge .

Dont forget it was older persons that invented all this stuff .

Buy dumb and then get a Fire stick/Box and load Kodi its all the tv you'll ever need.

It's very simple to do and there are loads of video tutorials on you tube, took me about 7 minutes from start to finish.

The Amazon Prime service is amazing value.

John Lewis offer a five year guarantee. Worth it for the extra £10.

Or keep an eye on the price at Richer Sounds (currently £219), where the guarantee is 6 years. Note that you have to buy in store.

Thank you for help. I am a Prime Subscriber - joined to watch 'The man in the High Castle!'......I'm not interested in gaming - not sure what streaming is (downloading?) but mainly want to use catch up tv and record tv.

If you've got prime, it makes sense to get the Fire Stick then! You'll get their Prime video and Prime music services on the stick. I'd wait to see if they launch the new model in the UK, since it gives you the facilities of an Amazon Echo (Fancy AI voice controls).

Sorry, Streaming is just watching TV/Movies from an online source - e.g. Amazon Prime video, netflix, BBC Iplayer.

You won't be able to record TV with a Fire Stick though.

Thank you! Not heard of Kodi? I like the simple idea!! Will have a look at this.
