Travel Insurance Claim re Flight Cancellation

Hi, wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction with this.

In August my husband took our 2 daughters on holiday, they flew from Dublin to Newark and were due to fly onwards from Newark to North Carolina however their flight was cancelled due to weather conditions. They were rebooked onto a flight the following day and were put up in a hotel overnight. He was told that they had to pay for all transfers and meals, basically they said it was not their responsibility and the airline had done all they needed to. He was told to reclaim from his insurance.

So our claim has been delayed by a few months but we're trying to sort it now! The forms he received from the company (Insure and Go) are all for flight delays, however his flight was cancelled. He's currently debating if it's even worth our while putting the claim in - he paid for transfers, meals and needed to buy a change of underwear and underwear for himself (the girls listened to mummy and put a change into their carry on!!) It looks like the insurance will only pay out for costs incurred due to the flight cancellation and nothing for compensation.
The other problem is that he has no clue what he's done with the receipts 😡

Should we just forget it?

If he has no receipts I suspect the chance of getting anything back is low.

Compensation is different from reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses (which your post is mostly about): the airline is legally obliged to meet these since the departure was from an airport in the EU. The lack of receipts will not help, but if any money was spent on a card then the statements should help, while the hotel should be able to confirm the standard cost of a transfer.

Which flight was it that was cancelled, Dublin-Newark or Newark-NC? And was the whole Dublin-NC booked as a single journey or were the bookings for each leg made separately?
