Help aerial confusion!

Good afternoon,
I do apologise in advance, I'm a total novice here. Basically we have just moved into a rented property and can't get the tv to pick up and channels. There are 3 aerials in the lounge, I have no idea why as they come from the same point in the room. I've tried a 2 as the third looks very chewed up.
I was hoping that it wouldn't matter as we are having a you view box and I thought it would be done via the WiFi and not need an aerial cable. But to my dismay I got the you view box in the post just now and it stated we need an aerial plugged in. But currently it's sitting on the floor as we haven't even got internet yet as have to wait for an engineer to come out tomorrow.
The property itself is old, but there is a aerial and a dish on the roof, I'm afraid I have no idea what the previous tenants had here before.
Anyone got any ideas or suggestions, I don't really want to pay out for a new aerial as we've spent a fortune moving in. But the one peppa pig DVD that is on repeat at the moment is driving me crazy.
Many thanks

  • Hi,

not sure of your set up, but as things are wont you still need a set top box for freeview, or a Sky box?
  • Yes I've just had a you view box delivered
  • Are the aerial points connected to the aerial? Aerials and aerial points are often installed, but not connected together.

You may find there is a cable from the aerial in the loft, with cables coming up from the various points, waiting to be connected.

    YouView
Freeview channels are via aerial .
BT TV channels are via the internet .

As far as i am aware You View boxes are Ethernet cable only and not WiFi .

If there are three leads and a dish on the roof, then its likely two of the leads are for Sky,whilst the third is for terrestrial TV. When you say "chewed up" do you mean that there is no connector on the end of the lead ie just bare wires ???

Live tv comes through an aerial (Freeview) or dish (Freesat), but the catchup services eg Youview need internet.

A PVR with Youview would receive, record, pause, fast forwards and rewind live tv, via aerial or dish input, but need internet for the rest.
If you don't want to record, pause etc., most (all?) modern tvs provide Freeview or Freesat, without a box, but do need the appropriate aerial or dish. A smart tv will also do catchup, but does not record and does need internet for the catchup service. It will, of course, work like a 'basic' tv ,without internet.
