Farway, many thanks to you. The files have arrived and are working perfectly. I have downloaded (free) Legacy as this seemed to get a lot of recommendations, but I think I will try a few free programs and then upgrade to a paid one when I find something that suits.

I really appreciate your help.

I have no excuses now. Back to the slog! Several of the people in my database have died since I last updated, so there will be a bit of work to be done there. Why didn't I make a note of them at the time?

A useful tip for the future is make gedcom backups now & then, maybe even onto a memory stick, and don't rely on proprietary programme backup for all your work
