New Orleans- Is it user friendly with mobility scooter

We have been going to Las Vegas for a while now and are thinking of trying somewhere else.
We have stayed with Vegas because we love the shows, casinos, general vibe and easiness of getting from the airport and around without a car.

Hubby is disabled and we would need to hire a mobility scooter (which is what we do in Vegas) to get around as there is no point hiring a car as because of his condition he cannot spend very long periods in car without a lot of discomfort so we try to avoid travelling miles as the air journey takes it out of him a lot.

I am wary of trying somewhere new and finding that it does not work for us. In Vegas we concentrate on the Strip and always find plenty to occupy us and we love it. I have always fancied going to New Orleans and hubby thinks we should go for it.
What I really need to know is- As hubby would need the scooter (I dont mind how many miles I walk) is it an easy place to explore and find plenty to do with a central base or is it very spread out making it necessary to take taxis or transport in order to really experience the place.?

I think the big plus is that NO is a pretty flat city (hence the huge amount of damage caused by Katrina) so getting around should be reasonably simple. The French Quarter is a compact area so if you intend to spend your time there it should be OK, although it may be difficult to access some buildings with narrow entrances or steps up or down.

There looks to be plenty of information online, this is the first site I found but there are lots more.

  • I personally don't think it is very suitable. Maybe look on TA forums for advice, the question has probably been asked before

  • I was in NO in August and it is quite compact and flat, however, as you can appreciate, I was not looking at the city from the perspective of having impaired mobility.

We stayed at the Hilton which was at the bottom of Canal Street which is a wide road that should not be a problem. Also, there is a tram stop directly outside of the hotel that provides good access to all of the things you would like to see within the city.

Where I could envisage a problem is in the French Quarter where the roads are relatively narrow and the footpaths can be congested.

That said, there were horse drawn carriages that were doing tours around the French Quarter that could be an option.

We included the city as part of a three week trip and we were in New Orleans for four days which I found was sufficient.

I would definitely try to give it a go and I am sure you will enjoy the buzz of the place.
