Foreign Car High - Currency Changes

I have recently hired a car whilst abroad, the rental for a full to full fuel tank and the rental company took €200 Euro's as a deposit on my credit card (Amex) for the fuel which was credited when I returned the vehicle with a full tank.

Due to currency changes over the week between debit and credit I was charged £183, (€200) but was only refunded £178 (€200).

Accepting it could have moved the other way, is there a way of eliminating this additional cost?

Many thanks

  • All the car hire companies I have used only take a reservation for the deposit not actually charge you and refund.

Which car hire company did you use?
  • They should have taken this as a authorisation on the card.

The only way you would have eliminated this was to pay in sterling

I dont know rhat you could do anything about it.

The exchange rate did move about that much, so it's probably accurate and just unlucky timing, rather than secret charges.
