It would be an ideal world where not only did none of us ever make mistakes, banks and lenders always acted responsibly, products were not mis-sold and people didn't fall on hard times for no reason of their own...

Your point is that the debt remains - yes it does. No-one has said otherwise. Legally however there is no enforcement that can be taken to make the debtor pay. Other than them saying "pretty please"...

I think you may have missed the top of this board where it states that DFW is here to provide help and support, not judgement. If there is a judgement to be made then it will be done by the courts, the rules for which can be altered through our democratically elected government (arguably that may be said not to be true at present), until then the correct advice - and not personal opinion - is that the debt is "unenforceable", not "un-owed".

If the debt collection company who have bought the debt want to pursue it then yes they can write letters. Why they would want to waste stamps is anyone's guess. They will however be as powerless as a toothless sloth.
Also a side note here and I say this a lot on these particular type of posts but what ever happened to the good old fashioned way of paying your dues rather than people who seem happy to avoid at all costs

Possibly you are on the wrong boards then? :) DFW is about helping people, not judging them or telling them how you loathe their very existence.
Take that as you may but I know I sleep well at night paying my dues and would hope that there is law changes that mean others who clearly evade them get there comeuppance as it most certainly not fair that you get to think it is okay for us all to cover your spending habits and ill thought out attitude of avoiding anything that you have spent.

Thank you I have repaid every penny I've ever borrowed and plenty besides in fees and rates. I sleep just fine helping people get back on their feet whilst trying to be a nice person and not judging (not always successfully because I'm only human)
This is exactly what I do by paying all my bills as I am indeed paying towards some people that are just pure chancers in life.
You could argue the same for people on benefits... I'm sure ALL claimants are there by choice... Not because industries have folded, companies gone bust or downsized. Likewise people end up defaulting because life happens. Sounds like you've been very lucky either in keeping your job forever, or in being given the right education in how to manage your finances. When I was on my own at 18 no-one had explained APRs to me, the reality of debt and so on because my parents generation "didn't discuss that kind of thing".

We're not here to be judge, jury and executioner - we're here to try and offer the correct advice, sometimes we stray a little because we are human.

My DFW Diary - blah- mildly funny stuff about my journey
  • Sometimes things in life happen that set you back both financially and physically which is what happened in my scenario. Im not a chancer, I had a very healthy credit file until my injury, and as I have said I have been paying Lowell whilst I investigate this matter further to see exactly where I stand.
