No thermostat

We have a 10 year old Baxi Combi 105 HE, however we have no thermostat on the wall or on the radiators. This is a house we moved into during the summer.

The boiler has a timer (with teeth) on it and a knob to turn the heating up and down, but the boiler this won't turn the boiler off when it reaches temperature, it runs and runs until it is off.

The house is often cold downstairs so we have to turn the heating up but then the bedrooms are far too hot.

I'm wondering what our options are-

Valves fitted onto the radiators upstairs- but I have read this doesn't actually stop the boiler? But would solve the issues of differing temperatures between upstairs and downstairs.

A thermostat in the hallway- how easy would this be to fit with this particular boiler?

A combination of both of the above? Any advice would be appreciated.

  • The only thing turn the boiler on and off is the timer. The thermostat on the boiler controls the water temperature but not the central heating. The TRV valves control individual radiators only.

So yes, I would recommend you get a thermostat at least, or possibly replace your existing timer with a programmable thermostat/timer. Maybe even a smart stat like a Nest/Hive/Tado?

The thermostat should be in a central location away from drafts and any radiators in the room should have manual valves or if they have TRVs they should be set to max. Use the thermostat to establish a comfortable baseline temperature in the house and use TRVs to adjust the temperature in individual rooms if they feel too hot.

Yes get TRVs fitted to the main radiators and a thermostat control system. Will save you money and make the house comfortable.

  • I've got the same type of boiler as you but the duotec model and same problem as you, no thermostat . I'm having it moved this weeek and the plumber said it would cost about £45 for a thermostat you can take from room to room with you and when the temperature of the room it's in gets to temperature it switches off!
