Quote for first car Insurance possible?

My partner is learning to drive and hopes to pass her test next month.

We will then be searching for her 1st car.

I have warned her that the Insurance could be very expensive.
Is there any way that i can get an idea of what it could cost?

She will be looking to buy a small car,Fiesta,Yaris etc.
The problem on the comparison sites is that we need a reg.number to get ideas of cost.

Any ideas welcome.

Also any recommendations for small automatics?

Thank you in anticipation

You don't need a registration number.

Just find one you like on AutoTrader and use the reg from that.

Depends on her age, location, what car she will be driving etc.

She can add you as a driver on her insurance and the price will come down a lot if you have no claims dicount. This is the best way to get the biggest discount. The more experienced drivers you have on your policy the lower your premium will be.

I have also found that putting down that the car is kept on the road outside your house will give you a lower discount to keeping it on your drive/garage. Also changing the milage to 4000-6000 will give you a discount.

However car insurance keeps going up. For a young driver expect £1500+ for an unexperienced older driver expect £700-£900. Depending if you add yourself to her policy.
  • Thanks all of you.
Having read the replies i guess my question was "can i check a possible price using a comparison site without a reg. No.?"

I ask only because i have only ever used these sites for my car and so i input the reg.no. So if i dont put a reg . and just say make/model ,year, value etc i will get a cost.

I want to give her an idea of how much this will cost me!:(

Go onto ebay, autotrader etc and find a car that you believe she might buy. Get the number plate for that car and use it in the insurance form. It's what everyone does when searching for a new car. Make sure you put it down that she has passed her test and has 0 no claims bonus. This way you won't get quotes based on a learner driver.

Also if you're with a bigger insurer you might as well try that because some offer discounts for people with mutiple car insurance.,
  • You shouldn't need a registration number but as the others have said, you can simply 'borrow' one from online car sales. Of course, this won't be an exact quote and I would recommend doing this for a number of different cars to get an idea which ones are more affordable to insure.

Probably best not to use your real details and to clear your cookies too as too much searching with real details can inflate prices (goes for many things online including flights, but that's another story).
