Scrappy, £5, make sure you test it first and get a guarantee of return if it turns out to be a dud. (doesn't hold a charge). And get a money back guarantee not a "swap for another" - You can decide if you want to buy another at your discretion, but at the end of the day you want the option to walk away with your money in your pocket not theirs.

I'd have thought a battery for an AX could be picked up new for about £35 inc VAT.

Phone them up for a price first, don't waste a journey just to find out they want to charge an extortionate amount - £10 or more.

Scrappies have to learn if they charge too much then you go elsewhere.

I remember I asked a scrappy for a price on a caliper once, he said £80! I said that's too steep, I can get brand new ones for 75+VAT delivered! The idiot wouldn't see sense in my arguement and I ordered a brand new one. Deleivered next morning.

I would never buy a battery from a scrapyard. In winter, a battery can fail overnight even though you've not used it and you've no come back

You can buy cheap batteries with a 3yr guarantee for an AX for under £30 from virtually any motorist shop.

It's a gamble, but if you really are tight for money spending a fiver on a battery (and I don't think you should spend more than 5 for a scrappy battery.) does make sense as long as you get a written (on your reciept) guarantee that if it doesn't hold a charge, you can return it within 2 to 4 weeks.

A scrap yard batt could turn out to last you the next 3 - 5 years all for just 5 pounds.

Look at it this way. You wouldn't change your battery in your car tommorrow for a new one would you...why not? because it's working. Well most of the cars that go to scrap yards also have good worrking batteries, they either had a car crash or an MOT failure or developed a serious mechanical fault, I'd hazard a guess that none were scrapped for having a failed battery. That's not to say all scrap batteries are good, no, some will be useless, good scrap yards will have a battery tester.
  • Viking International are quite cheap, but Euro are good 'uns too!
