I understand, showing your ID card does get you some, if not most of the benefits, but being a member give you access to web link that may not be available to you if you didn't know where to look. For explain I recently booked a return flight for my wife and me to Vienna with BA, using the link on the website. Unfortunately my wife had a very bad back during our visit and decided to just go to the airport and wait, but I thought I tried to get an earlier flight instead of an extend wait for the evening flight I had booked. The handling staff were very good and when I asked if we could get the lunchtime flight, the answer I got was, "well sir because you are "BA Family" we can do that for you, free of charge". That alone was worth the £5 fee I think I paid for the card. I didn't think much of things like the 5% off Argos gift cards, but you can get them on-line then use them in store.
