Am I imagining it or are portable hard drives going up in price as we get nearer Christmas. You used to be able to get 2TB USB drives for well under £100.
Anybody know any good sources/outlets/suppliers?

Zagubov,
Some great suggestions there for new drives.
But to pose an answer to your question, probably are going up in price, maybe due to Christmas but also (going to upset some now....) also the brexit vote. Drives are imported and Sterling has fallen considerably recently against highs of last year and even up to June. Hence imports are currently costing more (slight recovery last week courtesy of Mr. Trump) so it can only be expected that prices will have risen...plus there are not many manufacturers these days so competition has been reduced.0 -
I'd have thought that some drives, being manufactured in the UK wouldn't be affected by currency fluctuations, e.g seagate. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0

As far as I know, and that does not amount to very much!, Seagate plant makes disk heads and is not an assembly plant. Those are who knows where....
Components are probably imported anyway. However the competition is now just about WD and Toshiba and if the competition's price rises (non uk manufacture/assembly etc.) then I have latitude to push up mine too!:rotfl:0 -
The pound has taken a battering after Brexit, and computer hardware prices seem to fluctuate quite quickly in response to market events (unlike, say, groceries, which lag behind a bit).0

If Marmite and Walkers crisps can go up in price, surely hard disk prices are quick to follow?0

Seagate are the most unreliable drives I have ever made the mistake of buying. Never again. Western Digital WD for me and I don't mind paying a bit over the odds for their quality.... Given that most are made in Taiwan, they shouldn't really be affected.Seagate are the most unreliable drives I have ever made the mistake of buying. Never again. Western Digital WD for me and I don't mind paying a bit over the odds for their quality.
Brand isn't really the issue, it's always worth Googling the model number before you buy and NEVER buy the latest unproven products.
I have fairly good luck with HDDs as most of mine are on 24/7 with no spin up/down cycling. I know for sure I have a Seagate that's been up since 2009, my other drives are a mix of Samsung and WD, I do like WD though.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”
