Selling cds

Morning team!

I have about 3-400 cds in the garage taking up way too much room...

What would be the most lucrative way of selling them?

My thoughts are to do them one at a time on ebay, setting the start price as a quid and charging p and p at the price of a jiffy envelope and a stamp so I get at least a quid for each one that sells....

What would ebay fees be on a £1 cd?

Is there a better way?

Assuming you charged your £1, and postage was set at 73p for 2nd class postage and 12p for a padded jiffy bag then your buyer would be paying £1.85. From that £1.85 you would get approx. £1.39 which would include the cost of postage and packing. That assumes you don't pay to list.

However, CDs unless cult or rare are not really good sellers any more so you would first need to make sure that a buyer will pay £1.85, so you would need to look through completed and sold listings on ebay first. There is no point in wasting time listing CDs that do not sell. Make sure you look at sold listings though, not just listed ones.

Alternatively you could try one of the bulk buying sites like musicmagpie, who may take some of them and tend to pay around the 30p mark.

Agree with the above. Music Magpie etc... is far easier for the money involved. Download an app, scan the barcodes, send them free post and get your money. Its only 30p or so a CD but its probably about how much you'd get for them. Unless they are rare Cds it could take ages to sell even if they did sell. Just search on Amazon to see how much they are being sold for second hand (or in some cases brand new). People's music collection is rarely worth what they think they will be.

If you do have rare CD's and wanted a quick and easy sale you could always send the list to a dealer. They may give you more.
  • Recent pop and R&B are poor sellers. Big selling indie stuff from the 90s and 00s don't sell well either. You'd even struggle to sell them in job lots for pennies.

Any other stuff, like said before, check the completed listings to see what you may get for them. And use buy-it-nows, not auctions.
  • What exactly are the genres or artists? Something in the charts 6 months ago is probably worthless unless in mint condition. You will attract collectors if you can put mint in the title, as long as it is actually mint. Something surprisingly as common as Pink Floyd is collectable and you'll get good money for. Now That's What I call music anywhere from number 4 - mid teens are so collectable that the one's on eBay are clever fakes.

Sounds like you have time to sort them.

    I had a similar batch.

First, for a money saving site I think Music Magpie is a horrendous suggestion, a time saving site perhaps. You'll get 30p a disc on average, one or two will get £1 or more for but you'll likely be able to sell those yourself for a fiver.

Check them on Amazon. Download the Amazon app and you can scan each barcode (if you have a smartphone). Then you can check how many are for sale and at what price. Most will be pennies unfortunately but you'll probably be surprised by ones that are worth more money.

You can either list on Amazon direct or have a look at fulfilment by Amazon, where you can label each one and send to Amazon's warehouse where they will sell them for you. That has the added advantage of getting priority on sales over other marketplace sellers.

It doesn't cost anything to list them on Amazon, so you can park them there and (if you choose not to use FBA) send when they sell.

You're just in time for the only time CDs really sell.

  • WeBuyBooks has an option for would-be sellers to input the barcode and get an offer price for the CD.

  • Thanks for the feedback, people.

I knew I wouldn't be rushing out to buy a new Ferrari but it's a bit disappointing to be talking in terms of pennies!

There's easily a couple of grands worth there and it looks like I'll be lucky to get a hundred quid, by the look of it!

    Ah well.....

    I agree.

OP, unless you have a rare collection (and it happens!) then I think even getting into 3 figures may be a struggle. I know RFW recommended Amazon, but even then anything mainstream Is unlikely to sell at all, and slightly better/rarer ones can still make pennies after fees. Places like music magpie as a last result will not take everything either, so you can't even rely on the 30p for the bulk.

I see huge collections of CDs every week at various auctions- box loads, some modern, some slightly more scarce. The run of the mill stuff is likely to sell for around £3 per hundred (or not even sell and end up donated to a charity shop). If dealers see a good one in there then a lot might be bid up a few pounds, but I rarely ever see the huge lots go for more than £15.

Obviously now if you turn round and say you have super rare imported Japanese CDs (or such like) then we will all be wrong :D

    Sorry, but no, there isn't.

They're worth the market value, which is shrinking ever lower as more and more of the populace embrace streaming solutions and move away from possessing physical product.

That's even before you consider what effect being in the garage for some time has had on the paper and card components, and the discs themselves... unless you have them shrink-wrapped, in clingfilm, or other moisture-resistant wrapping?
