Definitely rescue it by putting Linux Mint 18 xfce 32 bit version on it. (The other Mint versions such as cinnamon are not suitable for an old machine) Linux Mint is a very good free operating system with lots of excellent software included such as Libre Office (MS Office compatible)

Hi-Linux works! A bit odd but at least I have web access. I think my partner will use this laptop & we'll keep as a spare. Dvd player doesn't even work!!!!
Seen another one-funnily enough the supplier is only 3 miles away (cuts down on postage)-is willing to give a guarantee & I can see it working etc. Also the'll put in an extra 1 or 2gb ram if needed for a fiver!
Thanks again all-you've saved it from the bin!0 -
Update! G/F happily using the Linux for the internet-I got an Acer 80gb 14.1 inch xp for £26-local supplier too so no postage. Sure-crappy processor & with my crap connection it won't set the world alight for speed but plays DVD'S, copies, etc-works but not silly fast! Gave it a right good clean up with the tutorial to speed up a slow computer on my other thread-but have also used black vipers (https://www.blackviper.com) '1 click' registry fix that is 'safe' (there are settings to tweak more on there but a bit risky)-that really has speeded this up & my windows 7 (also a 1-click option on there too) PC downstairs. Thanks for all the help! The 'new ' PC actually holds charge for 45mins to 1 hr-who hooo!0
