Why would lights stop working?

Hi

Grateful for any advice please. Two bulbs in my kitchen ceiling stopped working seemingly because they were dead. But, multiple replacement bulbs haven't worked either. Not sure if this is a small thing I can sort out or not?

Responses much appreciated please!

Thanks
David

  • Loose wire at the back of the light switch possibly, or loose wire in one of the light fittings (that's assuming the second light is just an extension of the first).

Thank you for responding. All the lights are separate...

So each one has its own switch and for only that light?

How many lights do you have?

    Are any still working?

Are they all on the same circuit?

Any other on that circuit still working?

There are two separate switches (one for 6 bulbs and one for 4). Remaining 5 and 3 lights are working.
Probably worth mentioning that they are both dimmer switches. One bulb was turning on and off and sometimes it would make a tiny rattling sound before it stopped working.
I think they are all on the same circuit.

Down lighter ? Possibly the rectifiers fried or the linked wiring is playing up

  • I'd be looking at the wiring on the individual light fittings then, to see if a wire's came loose, or perhaps the holder itself is faulty.

It sounds like these are downlighters. They can put out quite a bit of heat at the back, which can cook the wiring and the lamp holders. They may need replacing.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Are they 12V Halogen? They have a separate transformer (sometimes individually) which can get fried when the bulb blows.

Probably easy enough to replace the whole lot with a 240v GU10 (or LED equivalent).
