Advice needed re buying a new puppy - breeders?

Would anyone be able to give me some advice and opinions on a sad situation that has arisen?
We have just bought a pup from a breeder (ready to go end of december) we know and trust and already have a happy healthy dog from, the pup we chose was pick of the litter and accordingly priced but sadly he passed away last night (not health related) we have been offered our second choice pup at the same price as the original as he is now pick of the litter or one of the other pups at a reduced rate but several days ago the new pick of the litter was priced at the reduced rate.
We are very very sad about the loss of our pup and would like to know if this way of repricing the litter is normal in the dog breeding world? We are undecided as to which way to move forward and would welcome any constructive advice or opinions. Thanks for reading:)

I'm glad you know and trust the breeder, we read so many stories about rogue breeders who treat their animals like they come off a conveyor belt. But i do wonder why so many people spend so much on getting a pet from a breeder, when there are hundreds if not thousands of animals looking for new homes in places like the Dogs Trust.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

Thank for the reply, we were originally looking for a specific breed as we have unique requirements for our household, we contacted several rescue centres and homes including the dogs trust and we were sadly unable to help each other so we made the choice to contact a reputable breeder, however, we continue to support and encourage the rescuing and rehoming of animals where ever possible.0

What happened to the first puppy? I've never actually bought a dog from a breeder but would wonder why the pricing was so variable in the first place, if the parents have had all the relevant tests and are healthy and sound enough to breed from.
If the case was that the dead puppy was 'show quality' so might have been worth more in financial terms, then surely the 'second best' puppy either was or wasn't too? That hasn't changed just because your pup sadly died.
What is it about these breeders that makes you trust them and think they are responsible/reputable? What breed are we talking about?0 -
All sounds highly weird to me tbh
Pick of the litter would be where a pup looks like it's going to be a great show/working dog. So a pup would be born like that, not a pick of the litter and one in reserve
The pick would also be kept by the breeder or the owner of the stud, to bring along. Usually they know at around 5/6 months if their hunch was right. If they were wrong, and the pup wasn't as good as thought, it would then be sold on as a pet and that pup would be sold at a higher price because of the training it had received plus the cost of the care until then
All pups from a litter that's being sold should be sold the same price.
How did the pup you choose die?0 -
Thank you all for your input, we have now resolved this issue to everyone's satisfaction0
