Tyre advice please.
Hello.
I need to get 2 new front tyres for my Astra 60 plate.
It passed its MOT but there were 4-5mm tread left and i am not sure how it passed but on one of the tyre the sidewall has splits on it where you can put your fingernail in it and there are about 2 inches long ans quite a few also.
The tyres are michelin HP 225/50 R17 94 V.
At Vauxhall dealer was quoted £185 per tyre. No service club discout.
I have had a look online and there are some cheaper tyre but they are not the exact details as above, the speed rating and load are different.
Will it be ok to put on a 98 load rating or W/Y speed rating or will it invalidate the insurance?
I drive less than 5000 mpy and and rarely motorway and next year i will get another car so i dont want to spend hundreds on 2 ney tyres.

On https://www.blackcircles.com I can see the exact same tyre of £122 each. What tyres do you have on the rears and what's the tread like on those?0
-
As long as you put higher load & speed ratings on you will be fine.
Loads of quality tyres at just over £100 a corner fitted https://www.tyre-shopper.co.uk/search/225-50-170 -

yes it is and no it wont
you can go up but never go down so a higher load rating and a higher speed rating are fine but never go down below the speed and load rating recommended for your car0 -
Having re-read your post and see that you;re going to get a new car next year anyway then providing the rears are in good condition and the same size, I'd rotate them to the front and buy a pair of cheap tyres for the rear.0

neilmcl i have the same tyres on the rears, they are the same ones that came with the new car. They have 6mm tread left.
I just rechecked and they are Michelin Primacy HP brand.
force ten thank you for that info, i didn't want to buy different type than what i have and then find out i have no insurance.0 -

Although, even if you do go down, insurers would be hard pressed to get out of anything provided the tyres were UK legal and you weren't exceeding the fitted tyre's specs at the time. That's 106mph for humble R rated rubber - have a claim at that sort of speed and the tyres are going to be the least of your worries!0 -
Sorry to hijack this thread but I also need 2 new tyres on the front of my car, current tyres are Pirrelli 195/15/91T when ever I search the usual sites they also bring up 95 load and H and V speed rated tyres, looking at the figures the Dunlop Sport Blu Response 195/15/91H is giving 68db A wet and B economy at sub £50 per tyre, can I use these even though I have T rated tyres on the back, I don't buy budget tyres.I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world0

Yes you can use them - in the UK it's not a problem to have different rated tyres as long as they are not on the same axle, and as long as they meet the minimum spec for the vehicle.
Check the tyre label on the driver's door post or fuel filler cap door for the tyres the manufacturer spec tyres.
What car is this?
I think that very few cars come with T rated tyres these days - so perhaps some previous owner has fitted them to save a £ or two.0 -

.
Renault Megane MK3 Expression Estate 1.5dCi 90, with steel wheels, the tyres on it are Pirelli Cinturato P1 which are more expensive than a lot of the premium brand competition.I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world0 -
