Perhaps the OP can update the thread with whether he meant it was a general moan about Nationwide using URLs in their genuine emails, or he believes something amiss has gone on.
  • Just because you receive an email from a recognised email address it does not mean it it genuine. It is very easy to spoof email addresses.

The safest way to go is to not click on any links in emails from banks or pretending to be from banks if you can't work out what is genuine or not.

I also notice how some folk are aware of phishing and if they receive a fake email from a bank they don't bank with they automatically know it is fake. Yet if they receive a fake email from a bank they do bank with they think it is real because it is their bank.

Certainly. Esk shows he has a comprehensive grasp of my point here:

It sounds like the email OP received was authentic rather than fraudulent - it has the same hallmarks as those I receive regularly from them and complies with what Nationwide publish on their site as per post #4.

So, I don't think OP is claiming that there's actually been any sort of fraud here but believe that their broader point is that Nationwide shouldn't be encouraging people to follow links from emails as this is arguably poor security practice and increases the risk of falling for phishing (even though these particular emails are genuine).

Au contraire, the OP is claiming an attempted fraud:
Yesterday I received an authentic looking email
The OP was carefully worded to be unspecific. I did think it was legitimate, but wasn't on a library PC, which is the only place I would click on a dodgy-looking link. Oh, there's that word 'looking' again. Do you actually not know what it means?

So nothing untoward or bad happened, you just don't think Nationwide should be sending any sort of clickable link on their communications emails?

Just for giggles I have just been through my emails from 4 different banks and they all contain clickable links either email or URL, but all of course "spoofable".
