my son is 17 today & is having his 1st driving lesson - In April his grandparents bought him a used corsa in readiness which I reg & ins in my name & has used occasionally - which will be the best option
1 - add him as named driver for remainder of this policy & then when he's passed, hopefully by the renewal date he can take out his own
2 - get his own insurance now
3- add him as named driver for a few years but would he build up any no-claims himself
many thanx

Regardless of whether he has passed his test or not, if he is the main driver of the vehicle, he should be insured as such.
From what you've said, it sounds like the vehicle was bought for him, so unless he only has lessons in it and you drive it regularly, he should be the insured and you as named.
If you try and misrepresent who the main/named driver is to get a cheaper premium, this is called 'fronting' and can render your policy invalid. Not suggesting you're deliberately thinking of doing this, but just making you aware.0 -

he won't be the main driver as he's still in school & I sometimes use it to get to work, he'll use it on the w/e & take himself to his part-time job, his father also drives it under his own policy0 -
after spending many hours on-line I can't add him to my insurance as their underwriters won't do it, they can transfer me to another insurer & add my son for the small fee of £2200 ! - but after using all the comparison sites confused.com came back with Quinn-direct ins to insure him in his own right for £9700
